AJLI The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., headquartered in NYC. Also called the Association, the name given to the corporation of which we are a member League. There are over 296 Leagues in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and England, representing close to 200,000 women.
ACTIVE A member who has completed the requirements for Provisional membership and has been admitted to Active membership by a majority vote of the Board of Directors.
ACTIVE NON-RESIDENT
Status granted to Active members living in an area where there is no Junior League, or if in a League area but do not wish to affiliate until they are settled.
ADVOCACY
The pleading for, or support of, a particular cause, group of people or project. Often used interchangeably with lobbying.
ANNUAL HANDBOOK
An in-League publication for membership that contains everything you ever wanted to know about the League but were not sure who to ask! The Handbook is not to
be used for commercial or solicitation purposes. Formerly known as the Annual Directory.
BYLAWS Primary characteristics of an organization includes all rules and Bylaws which:
(1) cannot be changed without previous notice to the membership and the vote
of specified large majority and (2) cannot be suspended.
BOARD The Board of Directors - an administrative, managerial or quasi-judicial body of elected or appointed persons. The JLOSH Board is composed of 11 members. The President presides over the Board.
CONFERENCES
Sponsored by AJLI, there are three regularly scheduled conferences the President and/or President Elect to attend. The ANNUAL CONFERENCE is in the spring and features training, election of AJLI officers and policy setting. The LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE is set for the fall and provides training in League management. The PRESIDENT-ELECT CONFERENCE is held in winter every year and provides guidance to the President Elect to prepare for her year as President.
COUNCIL
A group of related committees, projects, or functions in the League, under the direction of a council chair. Councils are responsible for day-to-day management activities and decisions in the League. The League has five councils: Community, Communications, Membership, Fundraising and Finance.
COUNCIL SYSTEM
Leadership structure used by the League, which is specific to Junior Leagues. In the organizational structure of the League, the councils report to the Board of Directors.
DONE IN A DAY (DIAD)
A placement project and standing committee for JLOSH which provides opportunities for League members to participate in projects that meet the needs
of the community and usually can be accomplished in one day.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The officers of the League’s Board of Directors, i.e., President, President Elect, Community Vice President, Membership Development Vice President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary.
EXTERNAL POLICIES
The term used to describe Policy that defines an issue of interest and the desired goals, which are consistent with the beliefs, values, and purposes of the Association. AJLI’s External Policies are League-approved (an External Policy requires 85% of votes cast to pass), and come through the Association’s Resolutions Process.
FACILITATORS
League members or others who have been trained to conduct workshops which are designed to help individuals to be more effective in working with people and to help groups function better in accomplishing tasks. Specific skills offered in these training workshops include leadership, motivation, interviewing, communications, observing, listening and reporting, problem solving, handling conflict-producing situations, decision-making, assertiveness and team building.
GOVERNANCE DOCUMENTS
These are all of the documents in which the policies and practices of the Association or a particular League are written down. They include bylaws, standing rules, operational procedures and external policies.
GRANTSMANSHIP
The technique of soliciting grants by non-profit organizations through source selection, program planning and proposal writing.
INTRABOARD MEMO
Written Committee reports and any motions, which Board Members wish to present at the Board Meeting.
JLOSH Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills, Inc.
LEAGUE OFFICE MANAGER
Paid part-time employee who oversees League headquarters functions such as mail franking, maintaining office supplies, and telephone reception. Formerly known as the League secretary.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Granted to an active member temporarily unable to perform her volunteer duties, usually for personal, medical, or maternity reasons. These are applied for after consultation with her Placement Advisor, and submitted in writing to the Placement Chair for action by the Board.
MEDITATIVE GARDEN
Established in spring of 2004 in memory of Eric Josephs, the beloved son of sustainer V. Josephs. Special care is to be taken of this garden, particularly just prior to September 30thof each year.
MEMBERSHIP STATUS
There are 5 different statuses of membership: Provisional, Active, Active Non-Resident, Sustainer and Sustainer Emeritus (over 80 years of age and pay no dues).

States what the organization is and what it does.
NEW VIEW
The internal newsletter for the League.
NJ SPAC
New Jersey State Public Affairs Committee which deals with legislative action on behalf of New Jersey’s women and children and to train members of the New Jersey Leagues in advocacy skills.
ODIs Organizational Development Institute conferences. Periodic training conferences
offered by AJLI and open to League members.
PLACEMENT
Your placement is your League job. Each year in April members sign up via a lottery system for the job they would like to be “placed” in for the upcoming year.
PLACEMENT ADVISORS
League members who serve as advisors and are part of the Nominating Committee who are mentors to active members during the League year.
POLICY Policy is the term used to describe agreed-upon statements that guide and determine present and future actions and decisions of an organization.
PRIORITY
Part of the Strategic Plan, it is sometimes referred to as “Key Result Area”; it is a broad area in which improvement or results are a priority for the organization.
PROJECTS
The activities in the community which JLOSH funds and staffs.
PROVISIONAL
A member who is fulfilling the requirements for admission to active membership
by completing a period of training and volunteer service.
QUORUM
The minimum number of members who must be present at or during a meeting for business to be legally transacted. A quorum of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee should consist of a majority of its members.
SERVICE AREA
The specific towns served by a particular Junior League.
SERVICE CONSULTANTS
Junior League members selected to help the AJLI staff provide services on a volunteer basis to Junior Leagues. Leagues may request a telephone consultation or personal visit from a service consultant. They also provide training at AJLI conferences and ODIs.
SLATED To be placed on a list of proposed candidates for officers and chairs. JLOSH Board and committee members are placed on a slate that is voted upon in the spring.
STANDING COMMITTEES
Those committees representing activities, which are continuous in the program of our League.
STANDING RULES
Guidelines that support the bylaws of the Junior League.
STATE COUNCIL OF NEW JERSEY JUNIOR LEAGUES
State Council is composed of four executive committee members, six standing committee chairs and the presidents of all the NJ Junior Leagues. The purpose of State Council is to facilitate the exchange of ideas among the New Jersey Leagues; to supervise and support the standing committees and any special or state project committees; and coordinate activities for the mutual benefit of the eight New Jersey Leagues.
STATE EXCHANGE NIGHT
A State Council event in the evening where participants share information in round table fashion with their counterparts in the other NJ Leagues.
STRATEGIC PLAN
Plan that describes the work done by an organization to move it toward its Vision and Mission. Based on the priorities and goals of the plan, the organization allocates resources of people, time and money.
SUSTAINER
An active member who has served at least 6 years in the Junior League
(including her provisional year) and who continues to support the League.
Sustaining members shall have all the privileges of membership except that they
may not hold office or vote.
TRANSFER Member who has moved from one League area to another and wishes to remain active in League work; she transfers her membership to that area’s League.
VISION States what an organization sees itself as being in the future. Shared by all members of the League, it guides the activities of the organization.
VOLUNTARISM
The generic term for all that is done in a society voluntarily. Voluntarism does not include government institutions once they are mandated by law and funded by taxes. Religious volunteering is included because in the US we do not have a state religion or mandated tithing.
VOLUNTEERISM
Anything relating specifically to volunteers and volunteering; includes all volunteering, regardless of where it takes place, volunteer sector, government sector, etc.
